ABSTRACT

We start from the evidence that confirms a greater vulnerability to anxiety in people with autism and to wonder to what extent the intolerance to the uncertainty mediates in that anxiety. In addition, the alterations of the predictive abilities in autism could explain the coherence between greater intolerance to uncertainty and some peculiarities inherent in autism such as patterns of restrictive and stereotyped behaviors, interests and activities, and particularities in the processing of sensory information. This information will allow us to develop interventions specifically focused on this construct for the prevention and improvement of anxiety symptoms in autism in cases that the severity of intolerance to uncertainty constitutes a significant risk factor.

ABSTRACT

Stereotypes refer to popular beliefs about the attributes that characterize a social group. In the case of women, there is a gender stereotype related to an image of a woman based on thinness, beauty and care. In this context, a larger research was carried out addressing attitudes towards the female body in a sample of Chilean and Guatemalan women. This article contains the results of one part of the research carried out with the sample of Chilean women. The aim of this article was to explore the attributes associated with two body sizes in women. Thus, this article exposes the analysis of the responses identifying attributes towards the word "fat" and "skinny". Participants: 299 women between 15 and 64 years old, from various regions of Chile and a small group currently living abroad, who responded an online survey. Results: seven categories were organized containing the distribution of the attributes. Specifically, it is observed that the word "fat" is mostly associated to negative attributes such as psychological and physical discomfort, while the word "skinny" is mostly associated to positive attributes related with social assessment and qualifying adjectives.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of the Korean version of the Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI-01) among children and adolescents aged between 3 and 18. METHODS: The control group consisting of one hundred children and adolescents was recruited from schools and the patient group consisting of forty one children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder were recruited from a hospital. We compared the measurements of both groups. To assess the concurrent validity of the BPI-01, we compared the problem behavior index of the Korean Scale of Independent Behavior-Revised (K-SIB-R) and, to assess the discriminant validity, we compared the Korean version of the Child Behavior Checklist (K-CBCL). The Cronbach's alpha of the BPI-01 was measured to assess its reliability. Correlation analyses between the BPI-01 and the other scale were carried out to examine the former's concurrent and discriminant validity. RESULTS: The patient group showed a significantly higher score for all three subscales of the BPI than the control group. The Cronbach's alpha was 0.92 for the total severity score of the BPI and ranged between 0.67–0.89 for each subscale in the patient group. All subscales of the BPI-01's, i.e., self injurious behavior, stereotyped behavior and aggressive/destructive behavior, were significantly correlated with the corresponding subscales of the K-SIB-R. The BPI-01 generally did not demonstrate any significant correlation with emotional items such as anxiety/depression in the K-CBCL. Especially, the BPI-01's stereotyped behavior subscale showed little correlation with externalizing behaviors such as social problems and aggressive behaviors. CONCLUSION: This study found that the Korean version of BPI-01 is a reliable and valid behavior rating instrument for problem behavior in developmental disabilities among children and adolescents.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Captive animals exhibit stereotypic pacing in response to multiple causes, including the inability to escape from human contact. Environmental enrichment techniques can minimize pacing expression. By using an individual-based approach, we addressed whether the amount of time two males and a female jaguar (Panthera onca) devote to pacing varied with the number of visitors and tested the effectiveness of cinnamon and black pepper in reducing pacing. The amount of time that all jaguars engaged in pacing increased significantly with the number of visitors. Despite the difference between the males regarding age and housing conditions, both devoted significantly less time to pacing following the addition of both spices, which indicates their suitability as enrichment techniques. Mean time devoted to pacing among the treatments did not differ for the female. Our findings pointed out to the validity of individual-based approaches, as they can reveal how suitable olfactory stimuli are to minimizing stereotypies irrespective of particular traits.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To observe the effect of salidroside on tic behavior and in vivo dopamine DA) and serotonin (5-HT) levels in Tourette syndrome (TS) model rats.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Forty rats were randomly divided into the blank control group, the TS model group, the haloperidol-treated group (0.5 mg/kg x d(-1)), and the salidroside-treated group (50 mg/kg x d(-1)), 10 in each group. TS rat model was induced by imino-dipropio-nitrile (IDPN). Peritoneal injection of haloperidol and salidroside was started from the 4th day of modeling in the haloperidol-treated group and the salidroside-treated group respectively. Normal saline was peritoneally injected to rats in the blank control group and the TS model group respectively. Stereotyped behavior was scored, and changes of DA and 5-HT levels in blood and striatum were measured before modeling, after modeling, and after intervention.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Compared with the blank control group, the score of the tic behavior was elevated (P < 0.01) , levels of DA and 5-HT in plasma and striatum were reduced in the model group (P < 0.01, P < 0.05). Compared with the same group after modeling, the tic behavior score decreased and plasma DA levels increased in the two treated groups after intervention (P < 0.01). 5-HT content increased in the salidroside-treated group (P < 0.01). Compared with the model group after intervention, the tic behavior score was significantly reduced (P < 0.01), and DA levels in plasma and striatum were elevated (P < 0.01, P < 0.05) in the salidroside-treated group and the haloperidol-treated group. Compared with the haloperidol-treated group, the tic behavior score increased (P < 0.01), DA levels in plasma and striatum were lowered (P < 0.01, P < 0.05), the 5-HT level increased in plasma and striatum (P < 0.01, P < 0.05) in the salidroside-treated group.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>In the salidroside-treated group, the tic behavior was significantly reduced, and DA levels in plasma and striatum were elevated. Its mechanism might be related to regulating activities of dopamine neurons in striatum.</p>

ABSTRACT

In recent decades, many compounds with central dopaminergic activity have been designed, synthesized and evaluated pharmacologically. However, it has not been possible to obtain a drug able to improve or cure diseases involving dopaminergic regulation in the central nervous system, such as Parkinson’s disease and schizophrenia, among others. Taking into consideration the term “atypical pharmacophore” and from the compound 5, the aralkyl fragment was incorporated, and the compounds 10, 11, 13a-h and 14a-h were synthesized. Both the compounds 10 and 13a-h under its methoxylated form and the compounds 11 and 14a-h under the phenolic form, were evaluated to determine their pharmacologically agonistic and antagonistic effects on central dopaminergic activity. For this, the effect of intracerebroventricular injection of said compounds on the hydromineral balance and stereotyped behavior in rats, was determined. The results of the preliminary pharmacological evaluation show a centrally acting action through dopamine mechanisms, in which the compounds 10, 11, 13d-h and 14a showed responses as agonists, whereas compounds 14b-h, had responses as antagonists.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The purposes of this study were to examine the reliability and validity of the Korean version of Social Communication Questionnaire (K-SCQ) and to determine cut-off scores for diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). METHODS: A total of 166 subjects with ASD and their 186 unaffected siblings were recruited through child psychiatry clinics of university hospitals. Board certified child psychiatrists screened all probands suspected to have ASD based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition. To confirm the diagnoses, the Korean versions of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule and the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (K-ADI-R) were administered to all the subjects. All parents completed the K-SCQ and Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS). The non-ASD siblings were evaluated with the same instruments as the probands with ASD. We performed a factor analysis to examine the structure of K-SCQ. For testing the validity of K-SCQ, we compared the difference in Lifetime and Current scores of probands with ASD and their non-ASD siblings using t-test and analysis of covariance. Correlations between the K-SCQ and other measurements of ASD symptomatology, including K-ADI-R totals and domain scores and SRS, were examined. Receiver operation characteristic curve analysis was performed to extract cutoff scores discriminating affection status. RESULTS: Four factors were extracted through factor analysis of K-SCQ ; 1) social relation and play, 2) stereotyped behavior, 3) social behavior, and 4) abnormal language. Cronbach's internal consistency was .95 in K-SCQ Lifetime, and .93 in K-SCQ Current. There were significant differences in total score of K-SCQ, both in Lifetime and Current between the ASD group and non-ASD siblings group (p<.001). K-SCQ scores were significantly correlated with K-ADI-R subdomain scores and SRS total scores (p<.001). The best-estimate cut-off scores of K-SCQ for diagnosis of ASD were 12 for 48 months and over, and 10 for below 47 months. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that the K-SCQ is a reliable and valid instrument for screening autistic symptoms in the Korean population. Lower cut-off scores than the original English version might be considered when using it as a screening instrument of ASD.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Repetitive and stereotyped behaviors are core symptoms in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The purpose of our study was to investigate the frequency of motor stereotypes in ASD children and their clinical features. METHODS: Among 171 ASD children (age range, 3-15), the ASD group with motor stereotypes was defined according to two items in the Korean version of Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (K-ADI-R). We compared the clinical features, behavior problems and severity of other domains in the K-ADI-R and executive functions between the ASD group with motor stereotypes and the ASD group without motor stereotypes. RESULTS: Ninety (52.6%) of 171 ASD children had motor stereotypes. The ASD group with motor stereotypes had a lower intelligence quotient score (62.23 vs. 84.94, p<.001) compared to the ASD group without motor stereotypes. The ASD group with motor stereotypes had more impairments in the social interaction domain [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 1.11, p=.001] and communication domain (AOR 1.15, p=.008). Thought problems and lethargy were more frequent in the ASD group with motor stereotypes than the ASD group without motor stereotypes (AOR 2.059, p=.034 ; adjusted OR 1.045, p=.046). However, no significant differences in executive function were observed between the ASD group with motor stereotypes and the ASD group without motor stereotypes. CONCLUSION: The ASD group with motor stereotypes showed more impairment in social interaction and communication domains, which are core symptoms of autism. Motor stereotypes may indicate greater severity of ASD.

ABSTRACT

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impairment in two behavioral domains: social interaction/communication together with the presence of stereotyped behaviors and restricted interests. The heterogeneity in the phenotype among patients and the complex etiology of the disorder have long impeded the advancement of the development of successful pharmacotherapies. However, in the recent years, the integration of findings of multiple levels of research, from human genetics to mouse models, have made considerable progress towards the understanding of ASD pathophysiology, allowing the development of more effective targeted drug therapies. The present review discusses the current state of pharmacological research in ASD based on the emerging common pathophysiology signature.

ABSTRACT

Objective. To determine the prevalence of classic stereotypies in Thoroughbred racehorses at the Club Hípico Concepción (CHC) in Chile and its association with sex and age. Materials and methods. The entire population of resident horses at the CHC was studied (n=341). Each horse trainer (n=23) was asked for the name, sex and age of the horses under his/her supervision. After that, all the animals were continuously observed inside their stalls for 8 hours by only one person, to record the absence or presence of classic stereotypies (cribbing, weaving, stall-walking). To analyze the data, the animals were divided by sex into 3 groups: stallions, geldings and mares. According to age, they were divided into 2 groups: < 5 years old and 5 years old or more. Descriptive statistics were used and association was tested using the chi square test using p≤0.05. Results. 13.2% of all CHC's horses displayed stereotypies: cribbing (4.99%), weaving (2.93%) and stall-walking (5.28%). No association was found between the presence of stereotypies and sex or age. Conclusions. Thoroughbred race horses at the CHC showed a high prevalence of classic stereotypies, especially stall-walking.

ABSTRACT

Cocaine sensitization is a marker for some facets of addiction, is greater in female rats, and may be influenced by their sex hormones. We compared the modulatory effects of endogenous or exogenous estradiol and progesterone on cocaine-induced behavioral sensitization in 106 female rats. Ovariectomized female rats received progesterone (0.5 mg/mL), estradiol (0.05 mg/mL), progesterone plus estradiol, or the oil vehicle. Sham-operated control females received oil. Control and acute subgroups received injections of saline, while the repeated group received cocaine (15 mg/kg, ip) for 8 days. After 10 days, the acute and repeated groups received a challenge dose of cocaine, after which locomotion and stereotypy were monitored. The estrous cycle phase was evaluated and blood was collected to verify hormone levels. Repeated cocaine treatment induced overall behavioral sensitization in female rats, with increased locomotion and stereotypies. In detailed analysis, ovariectomized rats showed no locomotor sensitization; however, the sensitization of stereotypies was maintained. Only females with endogenous estradiol and progesterone demonstrated increased locomotor activity after cocaine challenge. Estradiol replacement enhanced stereotyped behaviors after repeated cocaine administration. Cocaine sensitization of stereotyped behaviors in female rats was reduced after progesterone replacement, either alone or concomitant with estradiol. The behavioral responses (locomotion and stereotypy) to cocaine were affected differently, depending on whether the female hormones were of an endogenous or exogenous origin. Therefore, hormonal cycling appears to be an important factor in the sensitization of females. Although estradiol increases the risk of cocaine sensitization, progesterone warrants further study as a pharmacological treatment in the prevention of psychostimulant abuse.

ABSTRACT

The broad autism phenotype (BAP) is a milder manifestation of the defining symptoms of the syndrome in individuals without autism. This study conducted a systematic review of studies about behavioral characteristics of interpersonal relationships, communication and rigidity, as well as about three cognitive models, Theory of Mind, central coherence and executive function, in parents of individuals with autism. The indexed databases were LILACS, IBECS, Web of Science, and MEDLINE, and the studies retrieved were published between 1991 and March 2012. Parents of individuals with autism have more difficulties in interpersonal relationships and in pragmatic language use and have more rigidity traits. The inclusions of the cognitive theories in the group of BAP characteristics were inconclusive (AU)

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The objectives of the study are focused on investigating the presence of old age stereotypes in ten countries of Latin America. In addition, the level of stereotypes among the studied countries, as well as the influence of social demographic variables in the formation of stereotypes, were investigated. Methodology: a cross-sectional descriptive study of seniors with ages between 60 and 70 (N: 965) from ten countries of Latin America was performed. The relevant information for the study was obtained using the old age negative stereotypes survey (in Spanish CENVE). After that, the possible associations between the social demographic variables and the CENVE factors were investigated through the analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results show that there are negative stereotypes toward aging in older people being lower in the presence of this motivational factor. Furthermore, a significant correlation between the variables “occupation" and "education" was observed, and significant differences of the negative stereotypes between the countries of this study were confirmed. Conclusion: Old age negative stereotypes in seniors mainly from countries with important differences in health, educational and economic conditions were identified. The educational level as well as the socioeconomic status influence the development of old age negative stereotypes.

ABSTRACT

We present the case of a 30-year-old previously healthy patient, who developed ofter numerous trips on a roller coaster a spontaneous hematoma subdural and a contralateral hygroma. Extreme speed and G-force deployment, the succession of moments of acceleration and deceleration, sudden cephalic movements with snarling side of the brain and the number of times that he repeated the trip, they constituted a significant risk of rupture of veins bridge, being possible that repeated falls from a towed buoy have produced the latest trauma and final trigger

ABSTRACT

Background: Stereotypies have been described in children with developmental disorders but their prevalence and characteristics in developmentally normal children is unknown. Objective: To estimate the prevalence of stereotypies in children without chronic diseases and describe their clinical and epidemiological characteristics. Patients and Methods: A Cross-sectional study was performed. Mothers of children aged from birth to 12 years, who attended the outpatient clinic, answered survey questions. Results: 406 surveys were completed; stereotypies were observed in 57 percent of patients, among the most frequent, finger sucking (21.8 percent) and nail biting (20 percent). A multivariate analysis identified that stereotypies are more likely in children with a history of stereotypy in parents, under stressful environments, and with mothers over 35 years old. Conclusion: Stereo-typies showed a high prevalence in this study, most frequently in those children under stressful environments, mothers older than 35 years, and affected parents.

ABSTRACT

Children with cerebral palsy (CP) have reduced postural control given that sensory and motor functions are compromised. There are several functional protocols for balance analysis, but few studies have used the force platform as an instrument of precision in this assessment. The objective of this review was to identify published articles that employed this evaluation of children with CP and to analyze the used protocols and parameters. To this effect, a search was carried out through the BVS in the following databases: LILACS, IBECS, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, SciELO. A total of 165 articles were found, from which 16 were selected on the basis of the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Studies have shown that the parameters of medial-lateral and anterior-posterior linear displacement of the center of pressure and the sway ratio have been used more frequently, and that the evaluation time of the force platform, in most studies, does not exceed 20 seconds. This review demonstrates that children with typical development present better postural control, and children with CP can increase their balance via specific interventions, including the use of force platform.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To observe the effect of Ningdong Granule (NDG) on stereotyped behaviors in Tourette's syndrome (TS) model rats of different Chinese medical syndromes.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Thirty-two Wistar rats were used to establish TS models of different Chinese medical syndromes (n =8) induced by TS children patients' sera of 4 syndromes, i.e., Xin-Gan deficiency syndrome (XGDS), Gan-Shen yin deficiency syndrome (GSYDS), sputum-turbid blocking aperture syndrome (STBAS), and Gan hyperactivity Pi deficiency syndrome (GHPDS). Corresponding sera was micro-infused to them while administering NDG (120 mg/kg each time, thrice daily, for 3 successive weeks). Besides, another normal control group (n =8) was set up by injecting sera from healthy children plus intragastric perfusion of normal saline. Stereotyped behaviors were recorded on the 1st, 7th, 14th, and 21st day after administration of NDG.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The anti-neural antibody serum concentration in TS children was significantly higher than that in healthy control [(1.28 +/- 0.36) UL vs. (0.52 +/- 0.24) U/L, P < 0.01 ]. It was (1.34 +/- 0.41) U/L in the XGDS group, (1.19 +/- 0.51) U/L in the GSYDS group, (1.29 +/- 0.61) U/L in the STBAS group, and (1. 17 +/- 0.45) U/L in the GHPDS group, showing no statistical difference (P > 0.05). There was no statistical difference in stereotypic behaviors of rats after treatment among the four different Chinese medical syndromes (P > 0.05). At day 7, 14, and 21 after treatment by NDG, the times of stereotyped behaviors were significantly less in the XGDS group than in the other three groups at the same time points except in the GHPDS group at day 14 (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). Meanwhile, the total numbers of stereotyped behaviors in the XGDS group [(42.8 +/- 12.6)] was obviously superior to that in the GSYDS group [(29.3 +/- 13.7)], the STBAS group [(21.9 +/- 10.4)], and the GHPDS group [(30.6 +/- 9.6)], showing statistical difference (P < 0.01, P < 0.05) after treatment by NDG at day 21.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>The anti-neural antibody serum concentration in TS children was significantly higher than that in healthy children. Stereotyped behaviors could be induced in rats after intrastriatal micro-infusion of TS sera rich in anti-neural antibody. TS model rats of XGDS were better improved than rats in the other 3 groups after treatment by NDG.</p>

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Children with atypical development often present behavior problems that impair their psychosocial adaptation. Objective: To describe the cultural adaptation to Brazilian Portuguese of the Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI-01), as well as preliminary indicators of instrument reliability and validity. Methods: The process involved translation, back-translation, and cultural adaptation of the instrument. Psychometric properties (reliability and validity) were assessed comparing scores obtained with the BPI-01, the Wechsler Intelligence Scales for Children and Adults, the Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 6-18 (CBCL/6-18), and the Autism Screening Questionnaire (ASQ). The sample comprised 60 children (30 typically developing and 30 atypically developing). Results: The cultural adaptation process was considered adequate. Internal consistency of the BPI-01 was satisfactory, with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.65 for the self-injurious behavior scale, 0.82 for stereotyped behaviors, and 0.91 for aggressive/destructive behaviors. Considering a mean frequency of 0.5, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve revealed 80% sensitivity and 3% specificity in the stereotyped behavior scale, 50 and 10% in aggressive/destructive behaviors, and 76 and 6% in self-injurious behaviors, respectively. Low-to-moderate correlations were observed between BPI-01, ASQ, and CBCL/6-18 scores. Conclusion: BPI-01 showed good psychometric properties, with satisfactory preliminary indicators of reliability, convergent validity, and sensitivity for the diagnosis of atypical development.
